The Police Officers’ Wives Association, Jigawa State Command, has marked this year’s International Widows’ Day with a humanitarian outreach for widows in the police community.
The event held on Tuesday, 23rd June 2026, was in line with directives from the National President of POWA, Chief Mrs. Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu.
The association said the outreach was aimed at promoting compassion, inclusion and social welfare.
Held in a warm and dignified atmosphere, the programme reflected POWA’s commitment to supporting vulnerable groups.
Widows were the focus due to the socio-economic challenges many face while raising families after losing their spouses.
The chairperson of POWA, Jigawa State Police Command, was represented by the secretary, Hajiya Fatimah Ibrahim.
She delivered the chairperson’s remarks during the occasion.
Speaking at the event, Hajiya Fatimah stressed the importance of remembering widows.
She said the day serves as a reminder of society’s collective responsibility to show care, empathy and practical support to those who have lost their partners.
As part of the celebration, not fewer than twenty widows received relief materials and financial assistance to cushion their daily needs.
The gesture was described as part of POWA’s welfare mandate within the police community.
Items distributed included spaghetti, groundnut oil, and seasoning cubes. Each beneficiary also received cash support of thirty thousand naira to help with immediate expenses.
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Police Officers’ Wives Association for the thoughtful gesture. Many of them offered prayers for the continued success and strength of the association.
They commended POWA for sustaining impactful initiatives that directly touch the lives of vulnerable families within the police formation and the wider society.
The Jigawa State Police Command also reaffirmed its support for programmes that promote social welfare and community engagement. The command urged individuals and organizations to extend kindness to widows and other vulnerable groups.
