The National Orientation Agency, NOA, Jigawa State, has sympathized with the government and people of the state over the destruction caused by Saturday night’s heavy downpour and rainstorm.
The State Director of NOA, Mallam Ahmed Tijjani Ibrahim, expressed the sympathy yesterday in Dutse during a meeting with the Head of Planning and Strategy of the Directorate, Ibrahim Attah.
Mallam Ibrahim described the incident as a natural disaster and called on residents to adopt safety practices and climate-resilient habits to reduce the impact of future occurrences.
He listed key safety measures to include avoiding wading through or driving in flood waters to prevent drowning and contact with contaminated water; avoiding shelter under trees, electric poles, or weak structures during storms; clearing drainages and water channels around homes; and avoiding building on waterways and flood plains.
He also urged the public to desist from indiscriminate felling of trees that serve as windbreakers, secure roofs and loose objects, and listen to weather updates from NEMA, NiMET, and NOA for early warnings.
The Director disclosed that several communities in Dutse and its environs were affected by the storm. He added that the Federal Secretariat Complex in Dutse was also hit, where a large tree was uprooted. No casualty was recorded at the complex.
Mallam Ibrahim further assured that NOA Jigawa will work with relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to intensify public enlightenment campaigns on disaster preparedness, response, and mitigation.
