The Jigawa State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development today organised a vibrant and engaging Children’s Day celebration, under the inspiring theme: “Future Now: Mispromoting and Inclusion for Every Child.”
This year’s event took place at the Ahmadu Bello Hall, New Secretariat in Dutse, drawing a large gathering of children, parents, educators, and community leaders.
In her address, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Hadiza T Abdulwahab, emphasized the significance of this annual celebration, stating, “The purpose of today’s event is not only to commemorate Children’s Day but also to present gifts and entertain our children, recognizing their rights and roles in society.”
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Barrister Hauwa Zakar, the Commissioner said, traditionally the event observed on May 27 each year, this year’s celebration was postponed to accommodate the Eid-el-Kabir festivities, ensuring that families could partake in both important events. Barrister Zakar reiterated the Jigawa State Government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of women and children, a pledge that has driven various initiatives, including the enactment of the Child Protection Law. This law aims to safeguard children’s rights and ensure their well-being in the state.
She also revealed that, government has established Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training centers designed to empower women and children with essential skills for the modern workforce. Barrister Zakar underscored the importance of these initiatives in shaping a brighter future for the younger generation, stating, “We believe that by equipping our women and children with skills, we are laying a solid foundation for sustainable development in our community.”
During the event, the Permanent Secretary urged parents to take a proactive role in their children’s upbringing. She highlighted the necessity for parents to closely monitor their children’s activities, education, and overall well-being. “It is imperative that we nurture our children into responsible, productive members of society. Their future is in our hands,” she stressed, calling for collective effort in child development.
The celebration featured various activities aimed at engaging and entertaining children, including cultural performances, educational games, and inspirational talks.
Notable speakers at the event included Abdullahi Dabo, Director of Schools for Nomadic Education, and Khalid Mohd, Director of Social Welfare. Both officials spoke passionately about the importance of education and social support systems in fostering an environment where every child can thrive.
Fatima Abdullahi, a representative from Save the Children, also addressed the audience, reinforcing the message of inclusion and the vital role that communities play in supporting children. She stated, “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that every child, regardless of their background, has access to education and opportunities.”
The event brought together a diverse array of participants, including students from various schools, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community groups. This gathering highlighted the collaborative spirit within the community, demonstrating a shared commitment to the rights and welfare of children.
The Permanent Secretary presented gifts to selected students on behalf of the Commissioner, symbolizing the government’s recognition of children as the leaders of tomorrow. The joyful atmosphere was palpable, as children eagerly received their gifts, participated in activities, and shared laughter with peers and adults alike.
The 2026 Children’s Day celebration in Jigawa State was not only a moment of festivity but also a vital reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to secure a brighter, inclusive future for every child. The day served as a call to action for parents, educators, and community members to work together in nurturing the next generation, ensuring that all children have the support they need to succeed.
