The Friends of Democracy Network (FDN), Jigawa State, has called for urgent action to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy amid rising threats to electoral integrity and public trust, as the nation marks Democracy Day on June 12, 2027.
In a statement signed by Chairman Muhammad Musbahu Basirka, FDN said June 12 remains a symbol of the struggle for justice, freedom, and the supremacy of the people’s will.
But it warned that electoral manipulation, voter apathy, abuse of state institutions, political intolerance, and monetization of politics are eroding confidence in democratic governance.
“Democracy cannot flourish where the voices of ordinary citizens are ignored, where accountability is weakened, and where public trust in institutions continues to decline,” the group said.
It urged government institutions, political parties, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, the media, and citizens to unite in defending democratic values.
FDN commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for the confirmation of Aujara State Constituency for representation in the Jigawa State House of Assembly, describing it as a victory for inclusion and political participation.
It urged leaders and citizens of the constituency to use the opportunity to deepen democratic culture and promote development.
The network reaffirmed its commitment to civic education, electoral accountability, youth and women participation, and policy advocacy across Jigawa and Nigeria.
It urged INEC to strengthen transparency, parties to embrace internal democracy, security agencies to remain neutral, and citizens to actively hold leaders accountable.
“As we commemorate Democracy Day 2027, let this occasion serve not only as a celebration but also as a call to action to rescue, strengthen, and renew our democracy for future generations,” Basirka stated.
