ABUJA – The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called for stronger collaboration between the media and security agencies to safeguard national security and promote national unity.
Idris made the call on Thursday, June 18, 2026, while declaring open the NUJ National Security Summit organised in collaboration with the Department of State Services, DSS, at the Abuja Continental Hotel.
Speaking as Chairman and Chief Host, the Minister said the theme “Media and Security Agencies as Partners in Nation Building” came at a critical time as security challenges become more complex and technology-driven.
“The media and security agencies occupy critical positions in the architecture of nation-building. While security agencies protect lives and sovereignty, the media serves as the watchdog of society and bridge between government and citizens,” he stated.
Idris stressed that the relationship between both institutions must be founded on mutual respect, professionalism, trust, and appreciation of their complementary roles.
He highlighted gains recorded by the Tinubu administration under the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that security forces have neutralised terrorists, dismantled criminal hideouts, and rescued hundreds of kidnap victims across the country.
The Minister said significant progress has been made in the North-East against terrorist groups, while intensified operations in the North-West and North-Central regions have yielded notable successes against banditry and kidnapping.
He urged journalists to uphold professionalism and avoid amplifying misinformation, while calling on security agencies to provide timely and credible information to build public trust.
Idris reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to fostering constructive engagement between the media and security institutions through dialogue, capacity building, and strategic communication.
He commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the DSS for organising the summit, expressing hope that its outcomes would enhance collaboration for a safer and more united Nigeria.
