The Jigawa State Police Command has announced plans to commence a statewide enforcement operation tagged “OPERATION VELVET” aimed at curbing persistent violations of road traffic laws across the state.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, 16th August 2026, and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawa Shiisu Adam, the Command said the operation is being carried out in collaboration with sister security and traffic management agencies.
According to the statement, “OPERATION VELVET” is scheduled to begin on Monday, 24th August 2026, and will be conducted simultaneously across all 27 Local Government Areas of Jigawa State.
The Command explained that the operation is designed to promote strict compliance with existing traffic laws, enhance road safety, reduce avoidable crashes, and protect the lives and property of motorists, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.
Under the plan, joint enforcement teams comprising police personnel and officials of relevant security and traffic agencies will carry out intensified patrols, stop-and-check operations, and targeted enforcement.The exercise will cover major roads, highways, urban centres, markets, motor parks, and other identified traffic-prone locations across the state, the police said.
The Command listed the key traffic offences to be targeted to include overloading of passengers, goods or animals, dangerous and reckless driving, driving against traffic, and driving without number plates or valid documents.
Other violations include the use of unroadworthy vehicles, obstruction of traffic, illegal parking, failure to observe traffic signs and signals, unauthorized use of tinted glass, and any act that endangers other road users.
To ensure swift action, the police disclosed that a mobile court will be constituted to expeditiously handle cases of traffic violations. Offenders apprehended will be processed in accordance with the law and prosecuted where necessary.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, psc, mnips, directed all personnel involved to conduct themselves with professionalism, civility, and respect for citizens’ fundamental rights. He also warned against extortion, corruption, and abuse of power during the exercise.
The Command urged parents, transport unions, commercial drivers, motorcycle and tricycle operators, and private motorists to cooperate with enforcement teams and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy with valid documents, stressing that “OPERATION VELVET” is a collective road-safety initiative to prevent loss of life and property on Jigawa roads.
