The new Commissioner of Police for Jigawa State Command, CP Tijjani Murtala, psc, mnips, on Monday, 10th August 2026, pledged to boost security across the state through intelligence-driven policing, collaboration with communities, and a firm stance against criminal activities.
Addressing newsmen for the first time in Dutse, CP Murtala said his task is to build on the progress already made and further improve the protection of lives and property in Jigawa.
He expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for the appointment. He also acknowledged the Jigawa State Government, traditional and religious leaders, other security agencies, and the media for their cooperation since he assumed office.
The CP highlighted immediate steps the Command will embark on:
Patrols will be stepped up both during the day and at night in towns, with weekend patrols strengthened in urban areas and special deployments during market days. The police will also conduct joint operations in crime-prone areas and suspected hideouts to stop crime before it happens and restrict criminals’ movement.
Regarding road traffic, the Command will enforce laws against vehicles with hidden or damaged number plates, illegal tinted windows, and unregistered vehicles. CP Murtala called on drivers to obey all traffic rules to support security efforts, and stressed that the exercise will be carried out professionally without intimidating the public.
To tackle drug-related offences, the Command will roll out a continuous intelligence-led campaign against drug trafficking and abuse. According to the CP, drug abuse contributes to violent crime, cultism, and sexual offences. The police will partner with schools, parents, religious bodies, and community leaders to check the problem, while ensuring that those involved in drug dealing are prosecuted.
On political activities, the Command promised to remain impartial. CP Murtala cautioned against political thuggery, election violence, vandalism, and hate speech. “Disagreements in politics should never lead to violence,” he warned.
He added that priority will also be given to tackling cybercrime, internet fraud, online extortion, and cult activities among young people. The strategy will mix law enforcement with sensitization, counselling, and dialogue to steer youths toward lawful paths.
Describing security as a collective duty, CP Murtala urged residents to volunteer credible and timely information to the police, and guaranteed that such information will be treated with professionalism and confidentiality.
He also emphasized that discipline and respect for human rights will be strictly enforced within the Command. Acts of misconduct, corruption, and abuse of office will attract sanctions, while officers who serve professionally will be recognized.
CP Murtala reassured Jigawa residents that his administration will be professional, responsive, and dedicated to safeguarding lives and property.
“Jigawa will not provide refuge for criminals. We will go after offenders within the ambit of the law, and anyone who breaks it will face the full weight of the law,” he declared.
