Jigawa State Governor, Malam (Dr.) Umar Namadi, FCA, has suspended all renovation and upgrade works at Gumel General Hospital with immediate effect. He cited poor execution and the contractor’s failure to meet required standards.
The directive came after a surprise midnight visit to the hospital, during which the Governor assessed the progress and quality of work on site.
Governor Namadi voiced strong dissatisfaction with the slow pace of the project. He said that despite the time that has passed since the contract was signed, work on ground was far below expectations. He also noted that the quality delivered did not align with the contract specifications or the state’s quality benchmarks.
The contract for the full renovation of Gumel General Hospital was awarded to Yasmeen Automobile Nigeria Limited on 17th December, 2025. The project is worth over N1.3 billion and was to be completed in eight months.
Site sources said the Governor, known for unscheduled inspections of government projects, was unhappy with how the contractor was handling the job. He then ordered all work to stop pending further government action.The Gumel hospital upgrade is part of Governor Namadi’s wider plan to rehabilitate health facilities and improve service delivery in all state-owned hospitals across Jigawa.
While the government has not yet said if it will terminate, review, or re-award the contract, the Governor’s decision highlights his administration’s focus on monitoring projects, ensuring contractor accountability, and delivering value for public funds.
