The Accelerated Basic Education Programme, ABEP, for primary-level education in Jigawa State has held a community sensitization meeting in Jahun Local Government Area to create access to education for out-of-school children.
The meeting was held on Friday, 20th June 2026 at 8:30 p.m.In her welcome address, the Education Secretary of Jahun LGA, Hajiya Jummai Bala, described ABEP as a key initiative to support children not in school.
She said the programme has identified communities without schools across eleven wards in the local government.
Speaking on behalf of the Jigawa State Ministry of Education, Director of NGO Liaison, Alhaji Babawuro Fata, said ABEP was initiated by the federal government and cascaded to the state to help out-of-school children access education through an accelerated learning model.
ABEP committee member, Ibrahim Salau, explained that the programme targets children who have never attended school.
He said 10 LGAs in Jigawa have been selected for the intervention, with Jahun among them.Salau added that ABEP is a short-term, three-stage programme, with each stage lasting nine months.
Upon completion, learners will have the option to either transition into formal education or acquire a trade, subject to certain conditions.
Director of Planning at the State Ministry of Education, Alhaji Sani Gimba, said admission will be strictly for children not attending school. He added that host communities, as stakeholders, are responsible for selecting learners and providing safe learning venues at designated centres.
In a vote of thanks, the District Head of Jahun, Magajin Rafin Dutse, Alhaji Balarabe Ahmad, represented by Magajin Garin Jahun, Alhaji Abdulhadi Ahmad, expressed appreciation for bringing ABEP to Jahun.
He urged stakeholders to establish more learning centres to give out-of-school children greater access to accelerated education.
