The Jigawa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has inaugurated two committees to plan the 2026 Press Week celebration and manage the council’s professional awards.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Wednesday at the NUJ Press Centre in Dutse and was presided over by the State Chairman, Comrade Ismai’l Ibrahim Dutse.
Comrade Sani Muhammad Gumel will chair the Planning Committee, with members drawn from various chapels of the union.
Other members include Sani Labaran Salisu, Nura Sani Bello, Bushira Muhammad Yakasai, Halima Muhammad Sani, Garba Muhammad Bulangu, Ali Rabi’u Ali, Usman Abubakar, Suleiman Isyaku Danbatta, and Bala Haruna Dan Hardo. Aminu Umar Shuwajo will serve as Secretary.
The committee is tasked with designing, coordinating, and implementing activities for the week-long event scheduled for October 2026. According to the council, this will be the first time NUJ Jigawa is organizing a Press Week.
In his remarks, Comrade Dutse charged the committee to deliver “a memorable Press Week celebration” that will showcase the professionalism and unity of journalists in the state. He said the event should also provide opportunities for capacity building, reflection, and the celebration of excellence in the media industry.
The chairman added that the grand finale will feature a Dinner and Professional Awards Night to honour distinguished journalists and outstanding personalities who have contributed to the growth of the profession and society.
Comrade Dutse assured the committee of the council leadership’s full support and urged members to work as a team and come up with innovative ideas that will leave a lasting impact.
In line with the union’s constitution, the council also inaugurated an Award Committee to identify, screen, and select deserving journalists, media veterans, and public figures for recognition.
Aliyu Muhammad Dangida will chair the committee. Other members are Aliyu Safiyanu Jahun, Talaki Muhammad, Najib Umar, Sadiya Inuwa Musa, Ahmed Muhammad Elleman, Adamu Bala, and Bala Alhassan Ronni. Auwal Muhammad Kazaure will serve as Secretary.
Responding on behalf of the committees, Comrade Dangida thanked the leadership for the trust placed in them.
He pledged that the teams would work diligently to organize a Press Week celebration befitting the NUJ’s reputation in Jigawa and beyond.
The NUJ Press Week is held annually to review developments in the profession, promote ethical journalism, and strengthen fellowship among members.
Activities lined up for the 2026 edition include workshops, public lectures, novelty matches, and community service, culminating in the grand finale and awards night.
With the inauguration of the committees, preparations are now in top gear for what promises to be a landmark 2026 NUJ Press Week in Jigawa State.
