The Nasarawa State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive enforcement exercise against the use of covered number plates, defaced registration numbers, and vehicles operating without valid registration plates across the state.
A statement issued to newsmen by command police public relation officer SP Ramhan Nansel, said the command has observed with concern the growing practice by some motorists of deliberately covering, altering, defacing, or completely removing vehicle number plates.
The statement explained that such acts constitute violations of the road traffic act and national road traffic regulations, which require all vehicles to display clearly visible and authentic registration numbers at all times.
It says the unlawful practice poses a serious threat to public safety and security, covered or missing number plates hinder effective crime prevention, detection, and investigation, making it difficult for security agencies to identify vehicles involved in criminal activities such as armed robbery, kidnapping, banditry, cattle rustling, drug trafficking, and other offences.
SP Ramhan Nansel, said, the police commissioner has directed all area commanders, divisional police officers, tactical commanders, and officers attached to the traffic section to immediately commence strict enforcement of relevant traffic regulations throughout nasarawa state.
The police command assure the public that the exercise is not intended to harass law-abiding citizens but is aimed at strengthening security and supporting ongoing efforts to combat crime across the state.
The command appeals to traditional rulers, community leaders, transport unions, commercial drivers, motorcycle and tricycle operators, and all residents to cooperate with police personnel during the enforcement exercise.
