Nineteen years after graduating from Maitama Sule Science School, Gaya, members of the Class of 2007 Chapter have honoured one of their own for exceptional contributions to education.
The recipient is Mallam Garba Usman, Head Teacher of Bright Talent Academy, Gano, in Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State.
The leadership of the Chapter presented the honour during a brief ceremony held at Bright Talent Academy.
Mallam Garba was conferred with a “Certificate of Outstanding and Dedication in Educational Advancement” in recognition of his sustained efforts to improve teaching and learning.
According to the Chapter leadership, the award was long overdue.
They described Mallam Garba as a product of Maitama Sule Science School who has remained committed to the ideals of discipline, hard work, and service since leaving the school in 2007.
They noted that his astute and tireless efforts at Bright Talent Academy have not gone unnoticed. Under his leadership, the school has continued to provide quality education to students in Gano and surrounding communities.In his response, Mallam Garba rejected the notion that the recognition had come late.
He said the timing was appropriate and that true impact in education often takes years to be acknowledged by society.“I do not see this as belated, but rather timely,” he said. “Society is a spectator to whatever one is doing. I hope history and time will judge us right.” His words drew applause from members of the delegation and staff of the academy.
Mallam Garba expressed gratitude to his former classmates for remembering him and for the honour bestowed on him. He said the certificate is not just a personal achievement but also a challenge to him and to everyone to do more for the advancement of education.
He dedicated the award to the Class of 2007 Chapter, commending them for keeping the spirit of their alma mater alive nearly two decades after graduation. According to him, such gestures strengthen the bond between old students and their school.
The Head Teacher also highlighted the success of the Chapter’s recent assessment of Maitama Sule Science School. He said the exercise was crucial in identifying areas that require intervention and in guiding alumni on how best to support the school.
He stressed that old students’ associations have a vital role to play in sustaining the legacy of their institutions through mentorship, infrastructure support, and advocacy. Such efforts, he argued, complement government investment in education.Members of the Chapter, in their remarks, said the visit was not only to honour Mallam Garba but also to reflect on how best to give back to Maitama Sule Science School.
They pledged to support projects aimed at improving facilities and motivating current students.The event ended with a call for unity among alumni and for more old students to take active roles in mentoring the next generation. For Mallam Garba Usman, the honour 19 years after graduation is proof that dedication to duty will always be recognised.
