The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Yobe State chapter, has donated cash to 40 indigent patients at Specialist Hospital and Women & Children Hospital in Damaturu to help cover medical costs.
The gesture is part of the chapel’s corporate social responsibility drive to support vulnerable residents.
Speaking during the outreach, Chapel Chairman Nabilu Balarabe said journalism goes beyond holding government accountable — it also means uplifting the poor. He added that the donation was a way of giving back, and pledged to make the support a quarterly initiative.
Balarabe urged other groups, organizations, and individuals to follow suit by assisting struggling patients, noting that about 40 people benefited across both hospitals.
Representatives of the two hospitals praised the journalists’ effort. Dr. Muhammad Aji, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at Specialist Hospital, represented CMRD Prof. Usman Abba, while Dr. Babagana Alhaji Kolo, Principal Medical Officer of Women & Children Hospital, commended the chapel for “practicing what they report.”
They described the cash aid as life-changing and a morale booster for patients, especially during peak periods for malaria and blood transfusions.
Some beneficiaries including Malama Halima Ibrahim, Amina Muhammad, Abubakar Musa and Bello Kawuwa thanked the chapel, saying the support would ease their medical bills amid the current economic hardship.
