In a significant development, the Department of State Security (DSS) has apprehended two principal suspects involved in the killing of 16 Nigerians in Uromi, Edo State. The arrests were made based on credible intelligence, and the suspects have been transferred to Abuja for further interrogation and prosecution.
According to Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the DSS operatives in Uromi made the arrests, and security forces are intensifying efforts to track down other individuals connected to the crime.
The Edo State government is also discussing compensation for the victims’ families with the Kano State government. Governor Okpebholo has visited the families of the victims and assured them of compensation, although the form of compensation is yet to be determined.
The arrests have sparked panic among residents in Uromi, with many fleeing their homes for fear of being apprehended by security forces. Meanwhile, the Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused opposition parties of attempting to instigate a crisis in the state.
The APC Chairman, Jarret Tenebe, alleged that certain political leaders are plotting to make the state ungovernable, aiming to force President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Edo. The security situation in Edo remains tense as authorities continue investigations into the killings, while political tensions rise ahead of the Edo Election Petition Tribunal’s verdict.
