A motion previously moved by Senator Sulaiman Abdurahman Kawu Sumaila, the Senator representating Kano South Senatorial District and the establishment of 26 new local governments. This is among the key recommendations presented to the National Assembly Committee on the Study of the Constitution.
Kano State’s support for an additional state and a substantial increase in local government areas stems from its considerable human and land population. The state government argues that expanding the number of administrative units is crucial for bringing governance closer to the grassroots, addressing burgeoning developmental needs, and fostering deeper community participation.
Currently, Kano State has 44 local government areas, and the proposal seeks to increase this to 70. Beyond the creation of new states and local governments, Kano State’s comprehensive memorandum, endorsed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the populace after extensive consultations, includes several other far-reaching recommendations.
